Employment of foreigners is governed primarily by Act No 435/2004 Sb., relating to employment. Foreign employees are divided into three categories in terms of their entry into the labor market:
  • EU, EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and Swiss citizens with free access to the Czech labor market.
  • Foreign nationals with free access to the Czech labor market
  • Foreigners without free access to the Czech labor market

  • proof of the required education (e.g. diploma)
  • proof of the required professional qualifications, if these are required by other legislation (e.g. forklift license or fortram/bus drivers, the relevant driving license, etc.)
  • a document proving that you fulfill the conditions for the practice of a so-called “regulated profession", if such profession is concerned; if you do not already hold such a document, you must also apply for recognition of your professional qualification by the competent Czech recognition institution when you apply for an employment card. The issuing of the employment card is dependent on a positive decision of the recognition institution...
  • a valid travel document
  • a contract of employment or employment agreement (or at least a future contract in which the parties undertake to conclude a contract of employment or employment agreement within an agreed period of time)
  • proof of accommodation
  • a photograph corresponding to the foreigner's current appearance
  • proof of the numerical identification of the relevant job vacancy
  • a document equivalent to an extract from the criminal record issued by the state of which the foreigner is a citizen, this document is not required for foreigners under 15 years of age
  • application fee
  • other documents in the case of special requirements

An employment card is a type of long-term residence permission in the Czech Republic where the purpose of the foreigner's residence (longer than 3 months) is to be employed. A foreigner who possesses an employment card is entitled to:

  • to stay in the territory of the Czech Republic and at the same time
  • (to) work in the position for which the employee card was issued

The Employee Card is intended/available for foreigners from any country in the world, except for citizens of EU/EEA Member States and Switzerland and their family members from other countries who either possess or have already applied for a residence card for a family member of an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen.

  • you have completed a higher vocational or university degree if the studies have taken at least 3 years (higher qualifications)
  • you will be working in a position that requires this kind of qualification proof of accommodation
  • you will have a contract of employment or a future contract for a minimum period of six months with a salary of at least 1.5 times the average gross wage in the Czech Republic

A special form is the "Blue Card", which is a type of long-term residence permission that entitles third-country citizens to legally stay and work in the Czech Republic for more than 3 months in a position that requires high qualifications.
